Increase the number to allow mainland students to study in Hong Kong, now!

Hong Kong as an international city admits some non-local students to local universities. The students from the mainland who were admitted to local universities have become more and more since the handover in 1997. Recently, some people have suggested increasing the number of these students and allowing them to apply for the undergraduate programmes in local universities. As Chinese, I do support such an idea for the following reasons.

¡@

Firstly, it is a fact that there were a small number of overseas students who were studying in local universities each year. Accepting no-local students to study in local universities is not unusual, as many universities around the world do have policy like this. When the no-local students are studying locally, the universities will have a chance to enhance their reputation. Being a city with freedom of study, Hong Kong universities admit overseas students like Americans, British, why don¡¥t they admit students from the mainland and increase the number of applicants? Hong Kong also needs to promote itself to the mainland, which, in the coming century, will play a vital role in the world.

Secondly, since the handover, the business and trade between the mainland and Hong Kong has become closer and closer. There are an increasing number of businessmen coming to Hong Kong, and businessmen going to the mainland. As a part of China, we Hong Kong people need to know more about our nation and to explore it. As the same time, people in the mainland are also interested in re-knowing the special region, which is separated from its motherland for more that a century. In consequence, communication between the two regions should be more effective. For general citizens, they can visit the places more often. However, academically, there should be more and more exchange programmes for students, especially the university ones.

Because Hong Kong has its advantages in law making, freedom of study and environmental protection as well as world trade, the mainland students should some here and learn about these. It will help the development in local region and in the country. This is also why the universities were established ¡V to help develop and improve the nation and the quality of life in Hong Kong.

Thirdly, when the universities increase the number for admitting mainland students to local undergraduate programmes, we, the Form Seven students should worry nothing, as it will not affect the admission of local students to local universities. The admission of local students and non-local students are separated from each other and the number of admitting local students would not be affected. What these students need to be concerned about is that they have to mind their own staff ¡V working hard. They should bear in mind that only by doing the best of themselves could gain a promotion to universities. So, grumbling is not the solution, no matter when it is.

To conclude, increasing the number to allow more mainland students to study in Hong Kong has lots of advantages. And the last thing I want to highlight is that by doing so, we Chinese will be more united and we do not need to worry separating from the motherland again!
